Cool Food Facts

Did you hear?

Did you hear? The secret is out!  Food isn’t just for eating anymore. You’re thinking, “yeah I knew that. Food fight!”  That is true and a ton of fun, but there are so many cool food facts out there, too. So let’s discover just how cool food can be.

Cool Food Facts

You can dye an eggshell a cool color when you boil it with something like coffee (brown), spinach (green), blueberries (lavender), yellow onion skins (orange-brown), or cranberry juice (pink).

You can learn the correct way to open a banana from a monkey.  The correct way to open a banana is not from its stem, but rather from its bottom so the stringy, white fibers peel away easily.  Can you believe that’s how monkeys have been doing it all along?

This one is Willy’s favorite cool food fact. Honey is the only food we eat that will NEVER go bad. It might get harder and crystallized after a while, but that’s not because it has gone bad. It’s the only food for humans that doesn’t spoil.

Can an egg ever bounce like rubber ball?  You bet it can. Just put an egg in vinegar for a day. Vinegar is acidic so it will eat away the egg’s hard shell (watch the bubbles) and leave a thin membrane that is still holding the egg’s insides.  It could break if you bounce it too hard so be careful…unless you’re looking for a prank.

You can make pains like headaches go away by eating tart cherries.  The same thing that gives cherries their color, called anthocyanins, can work better than some medicine.  You’ll need to eat about twenty.

Do you want your green banana to hurry up and ripen?  Bananas turn yellow when they are ripe. You can make that happen faster by putting it in a bag with an apple. The bag traps more of the gas released by the banana and apple. That gas speeds up the ripening process.

All types of mushrooms are poisonous.  As a rule of thumb, the mushrooms you get from the store or farmers market are safe to eat, even though they have a very teeny, tiny bit of poison.  But we would have to eat so much for the poison to do anything bad to us.  So don’t worry.  Go for that slice of mushroom pizza. Just DON’T eat mushrooms you find growing outside!

You can tell why a fruit or vegetable is good for your body just by looking at its color.  Yellow and orange fruits and vegetables, like bell peppers and carrots, have a lot of vitamin A. Vitamin A helps keep your immune system strong so you don’t get sick.  It also makes your eyes see great, especially when it’s dark. See, when you eat lots of vegetables you will develop super power and you can see in the dark.

Did you know that apples can swim? Oh yes they can. Apples can float in water because they are 25% air. How else could we bob for apples?

How old do you think popcorn is?  It’s over 6,000 years old. It looks pretty good, don’t you think?  Maybe you could have some at Thanksgiving. The pilgrims ate it at their first Thanksgiving! You can surprise everyone when you tell them that. If you think that popcorn is old, did you know that the oldest piece of chewing gum is 9,000 years old?  We’d show you a picture, but ICK!

Wasn’t that fun? See, there are so many things about our food that makes it interesting. Now go and tell others.
